Background

Established in 1977, our facility has 5600 sq. ft. of manufacturing area and 1200 sq. ft. of office and design area. We employ ten toolmakers, two engineers, as well as purchasing and sales staff.

We design and manufacture plastic injection molds, die cast dies, stamping dies, and misc. individual custom parts and fixtures as well as repair work and engineering changes. We are capable of handling jobs ranging from very small details up to 30" X 40" plates (typically molds for a 500 ton press and smaller). We take great pride in the know-how and skill of our team, we excel at jobs that are difficult to design and build and we are confident that "no job is too tough". All work on tools that we build is done "in-house", we handle every aspect of a job from the initial design and concept, through all facets of manufacturing, down to the final fit and finish.

Engineering
A good tool begins with a good design. Our engineers use state of the art computers and software tools to design all the parts we make. We can import data from virtually any system, we have brought in CAD data from Pro/Engineer, Catia, SDRC, Unigraphics, Autocad Mechanical Desktop, etc. We use a wide array of solid modeling and surfacing tools to design and manufacture molds and dies. We can handle the most complex, contoured, cavities and cores. If it CAN be molded, we CAN design it!

Manufacturing
We utilize 2 Hurco CNC milling machines to accomplish much of our complex machining, 2 Agie EDMs for all of our Electrical Discharge Machining, as well as many manual machines to accomplish other tasks. We have a very efficient, balanced approach towards manufacturing.

In regards to our CNC mills; jobs are programed BOTH at the machine and in the office. Toolmakers (not just "setup" people) in the shop are trained to program the machines on the shop floor. These toolmakers are very efficient at using the equipment to the best of their abilities, the combination of the machines software and the expertise of the men on the floor makes machining, even small one time jobs, faster, more accurate, and cost effective. Some jobs, however, require complex, free-form, contoured surfaces to be machined. These types of surfaces are developed in the engineering department and cutter paths are generated using one of our computer-aided machining systems either in the design room or on the shop floor.

Narrow ribs, gussets, and fine detail are often difficult or impossible to machine by conventional means, are easily installed using our EDM equipment. The skilled men in our EDM department can make their own electrode tooling or electrodes for very complex parts or with elaborate configurations can be created by our CNC department. Often we also utilize our EDM for metal to metal burning of contoured parting lines. This method guarantees crisp, perfect shut-offs.

We do not lean too heavily on any single tool or method. We gather all of our resources, human and technical, to gain the greatest effect. Some work is best done on manual equipment, not all jobs should be programmed off line, and toolmakers must be free to apply their expertise on the shop floor. One of our major advantages is our ability to accommodate this level of flexibility. Everyone at Fehrman Tool takes a great deal of personal pride in their work. Everyone is permitted, indeed, expected to pursue improvements in tool design or manufacturing wherever they see an opportunity. We maintain a flexible but balanced approach to tool building that blends both high tech equipment and practical skill and expertise.
